Normally, the custom in Italy in naming children goes like this::

The first male is named after the paternal grandfather.
The second male is named after the maternal grandfather.
The first female is named after the paternal grandmother.
The second female is named after the maternal grandmother.

This is a general guide, but not every family followed this custom. Also, if the first male child died, the next male child may be given the same first name as the deceased child. This could occur at any time so there could be many Salvatore in one family.
